University of Zambia (UNZA) School of Medicine Professor Violet Kayamba has revealed that Zambia is facing a serious health threat from one of the world’s deadliest stomach cancers, also known as gastric cancer.
In an interview with Sun FM TV News, Professor Kayamba explained that gastric cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, yet its prevalence in Zambia remains underestimated due to limited diagnostic data.
She noted that diagnostic equipment for detecting the disease is scarce, available only in a few locations across the country, adding that this lack of access makes early detection challenging and contributes to late-stage diagnoses.
Professor Kayamba further emphasized that the infection responsible for causing gastric cancer is widespread in Zambia.
She called for increased diagnostic testing to identify cases early and prevent avoidable deaths.
Gastric cancer is associated with several risk factors, including smoking and diets high in processed or salty foods.
The disease often presents no symptoms in its early stages, but later signs may include bloating after meals, early satiety, nausea, heartburn, and indigestion.
